#518: Cruiser IPA – East Coast Beer Company, Point Pleasant, NJ
Poured into a glass that would never be mistaken for “bar clean,” this beer sports a reddish orange hue, quite transparent, with a foamy head that could’ve been bigger if not for the oily glass. Nice nose; the usual American IPA bouquet of grapefruit, pineapple, citrusy bits that are all too familiar, in a good way. On the palate, the beer goes elsewhere. Far more malty than the aroma was letting on. The hops are there, though, in their citrusy glory of course. But they dot the beer as opposed to dominate it. Nice blanket of caramelly malt underneath, and a finish that has surprisingly little in the way of bitterness.
The Verdict: Quite nice. It won’t blow the palate away with an unmerciful hop shelling, and I’m guessing that wasn’t the plan for this one. Instead, it’s a simple thing done quite well. Cheers to that.
